Club Evening Reports

05/02/14 – Packed to the Rafters

We were pleased to welcome two visitors; Joanna and Brian, who I think we were able to put on a good show for them, as our GE, Lilian, said it was both educational and enjoyable. We had a fine B3 from Oscar Godfrey informing us about “Eric Weisz”. Do you know who he was? Well we all do; and this was evaluated enthusiastically by Roy. Next, Thomas gave us a B4 on “Manipulation” and he manipulated the audience’s reactions in many ways; Janet Wakeman wanted more gestures so we will be lucky enough to see Thomas’s B4 again. Janet Edwards gave a most moving B7, describing life in and out of the workhouse titled “The Spike” and James Browning also gave his B7 “Barriers to effective communication”.  Both were asked to move on, by Phil Brown and Bob Wooldridge in turn; and Phil was awarded the prize for best evaluation, in fact for evaluating the best speech of the night – Janet’s B7. Our last pre-prepared speech was Phil (again), practising his speech for the upcoming area speech competition (this Friday – go Phil!). It must be good because it’s the third time I’ve heard it and I was gripped from start to finish. The audience marked him using the judge’s sheets and scores were high – very high. But I think he did get some useful verbal feedback for making it even better – we all learn at Sans Souci. Our Topics Chair was Ivan who followed his practice of allowing a short time for the topics takers to think about their titles. This time everyone was fantasizing about second-hand items bought at a house sale. All the topics takers did well, Ivan’s style allows us to create entertaining mini speeches; special credit is given to our two visitors – Brian and Joanne and to our winner of the meeting topics trophy – Janet Wakeman. Important items from the Club Business were;

  1. Remember we have our Poetry Competition at the next meeting – please send your titles to Janet Wakeman (James is chairing)
  2. Please try to go to the meeting this Friday to support our club members Phil and Bob at the area competition
  3. Ivan has to cancel next week’s social event unless there is a sudden uptake from members and guests. This is your last chance!

We had an expert combined General and Topics Evaluation from Lilian – mountains of good advice – this meeting was in the best Sans Souci tradition, entertaining and educational. David Godfrey – Education Director (Chair for the evening 05/02/14)
